What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis or trance for therapy. Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness, often involving deep relaxation, where the attention is focussed in a different way from the normal alert state. In this state you can use your imagination and access inner resources and parts of your personality that are not usually available. You can then resolve problems and achieve integration. You can also use hypnotherapy to change the way you perceive including the way you feel pain. Hypnosis gives you more control over your life.

What is it used for?

Hypnotherapy has many applications. It is particularly useful if you have a specific issue such as a phobia, a habit, or an addiction. It can also help to change negative thought patterns, performance anxiety, or other problems which hold you back from achieving your full potential. All these issues arise when you consciously want and intend to do something but find yourself unable to break old habits and patterns.

Hypnotherapy can also help with physical health problems, such as migraine, irritable bowel syndrome or asthma, which are made worse by stress and anxiety. It can even help with the control of pain in conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

A full list of situations where hypnotherapy can be helpful would take many pages so here are just a few to give you an idea of the range:

  • overcoming phobias
  • healthy eating and weight control
  • stress reduction
  • avoiding burnout
  • improving mood
  • improving relationships
  • reducing anxiety and panic attacks
  • controlling pain
  • childbirth
  • increasing confidence
  • post-traumatic stress
  • negative thinking
  • adjusting to loss or change
  • coping with serious illness

What happens in a session?

When you come to me for hypnotherapy, we will start by talking through the issue that you want to deal with and discuss whether hypnotherapy can help. I will explain more about how hypnotherapy works and you can find out what hypnosis feels like. You can ask any questions and raise any concerns you have. Together we will work out the best way to tackle your particular issue. Some people have concerns about being hypnotised. My approach is usually to use relaxation, which most people enjoy, or focussing on an activity which stimulates your imagination. I think that for therapy to work, you need to feel safe and comfortable.

How much will it cost?

My fee for each 50-minute session is £40. In some circumstances I may be able to offer a discount. If I arrange to meet you away from my usual therapy room in Chesterfield I may need to charge more.
